A Former Experience of .Norfolk's. To show the great trouble that may arise from the lack of precaution in deal ing with contagious diseases we give the disastrous expcricucc that Norfolk once had in being visited by a very dis tinctive epidemic owing simply to a slight relaxation of vigilance. Our towns man, Rev. J. V. Butt was at that time a resident of Norfolk. The epidemic began early in July in the year 18S5. The origin of the disease was this: Tbe steamer Ben Franklin which had had yellow fever aboard was permitted after having been at quaran tine a number of days to go up to a Portsmouth dock for some repairs to be made, provided that her hold should not be opened while there Though the in structions were carried out. bilge water was pumped overboard while there and this mingling, in w ith the chips of the ship yard spread the disease among the workmen and in a remarkably short time it was in every purt nf the city in a tcr ribly fatal form. We have been told that the deaths reached into the thous ands, that some families were entirely destroyed -not one of their number hav ing survived and that only two families in the place escaped entirely. Such a lesson as that in not easily forgotten by the inhabitants of the city that passed through the ordeal. The Orphan's Friend tells that the Oxfurd Orphau Asylum has just received an application for the admittance of an infant girl eight months old. The asylum doet not receive any inmates at such a teuder age, consequently the superin tendent announces that if ono wishes to adopt the little one he will furnish the address. Bergman, the anarchist, who shot Pres ident Frick of the Carnegie Company, was convicted Monday on live charges of felonious assault and of entering the building with felonious intent, and on these charges he was sentenced to the penjtentiary lor twenty-one years. He waa also convicted of carrying concealed weapons, and on that charge he was scu tended to the work-houeo for one year. 1 ,v- J A a. . , Tomorrow Is tho; day for Hon.
